Aaw you were such a cute likkle boy! What a beautiful photograph! Bless and God loved you back then, and the man you have become, the son He formed and creating you be in bearing His image and likeness all to and for His glory.
The scouts might not have done you a great favor by painting such a large area with that much old formulation Merthiolate- The active ingredient can be absorbed through the skin (let alone through punctures!) and sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate quickly dissociates in the bloodstream, releasing ethyl mercury (Google methyl mercury, they behave nearly identically in the body). Ethyl mercury has no trouble crossing the blood/brain barrier and has a long half life once it gets there (the mercury also accumulates in your kidneys)- One of the reasons newer formulations of "Merthiolate" & other brands no longer contain thimerosal, a little bit of organic mercury goes a LONG ways in nerve damage and unknowing people did occasionally slather it on large areas.
Ah. Back in the day we were all so ignorant, and trusting as we went about scrabbling for a way to live and improve our lot. But you know; even knowing what we do now there are still people of my generation that would still buy and use the stuff. I was rather shocked that it was used as a vaccine preservative, and may still be in some parts of the world.
Oh, I certainly had the red scratch muck applied to my hide as a child.
At some point, possible economic damages from not being able to afford mass vaccinations in the areas most likely to need them was likely projected and compared with damage from using the less benign but cheaply available no refrigeration required multi dose preservative technology (to 3rd world kids).
In countries where refrigeration was common and the cost of many individual dose vials wasn't a deal breaker, we had different priorities- Also, those kids might live across the street.

I appreciate you reading and your comment. I must admit my maternal grandmother spoiled me rotten though.
I remember well frequently being painted with something called Mercurochrome. Red-orange badges of valor, bravery and foolishness, all in one.
